Understanding the Cost of Emergency Dentistry

Since dental injuries, like a chipped, cracked, or knocked out tooth, usually happen unexpectedly, it’s very common for patients to be concerned about the cost. Rest assured, we will provide you with an estimate after alleviating any pain you’re experiencing and completing a comprehensive oral exam. In the meantime, you can read on to learn some general information on the topic, including if dental insurance providers usually cover a portion of it.

Why Every Dental Emergency is Different

The reason the cost of emergency dentistry in Dallas isn’t the same across the board is that there are several factors that need to be considered, including the patient’s dental history, the type of injury they’ve sustained, and their budget. With all of that said, you don’t have to worry – our team at Dizon Dental Aesthetics won’t leave you in the dark about the price. Quite the opposite: we will provide you with an estimate after completing the exam and reviewing all of your treatment options.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Dental Emergencies?

In addition to covering the cost of preventive care, some dental insurance providers cover a portion of the cost of restorative treatments, like tooth-colored fillings, dental crowns, and root canals. So, if you are insured, read through the fine print on your plan to familiarize yourself with your benefits! You can also provide us with your membership information. Although we are a fee-for-service practice, we can file on your behalf and provide you with an estimate of your out-of-pocket expenses.

Other Options for Making Dental Emergencies Affordable

If you are uninsured, consider signing up for Clerri! Doing so comes with several cost-saving benefits, including one emergency visit per year and discounts on procedures completed at our office. Plus, you won’t have to worry about the usual red tape, like waiting periods and yearly deductibles. If this sounds like a financial solution you’re interested in learning more about, then take the next step: give us a call.

How Taking Care Of Your Smile Can Save You Money

Although accidents can happen suddenly, many dental injuries are preventable. So, if you want to protect your smile (and your wallet!) from emergency care, it’s important to take certain precautions, like brushing your teeth twice a day, scheduling a dental exam every six months, and wearing a mouthguard during sports.

Of course, what you don’t do is equally as important. In addition to steering clear of tobacco products, we recommend limiting your intake of added sugar, not chewing on ice cubes, and not using your teeth as tools to open things, like plastic wrapping.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

While our team at Dizon Dental Aesthetics is always ready to help you recover from dental emergencies, the best path is always prevention. Investing time, money, and effort into keeping your teeth healthy can stop dental problems from costing you more later on. Here are a few expert tips to minimize your risk of dental disasters all year long.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Seeing your dentist twice a year for cleanings and exams is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent dental emergencies. During your visit, our team can look for small problems, like tiny cavities or loose restorations, before they turn into painful or costly issues. If you want your smile to be healthy, strong, and less prone to sudden dental pain, seeing Dr. Gabby every six months is a must.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene Habits at Home

Between dental visits, your home care routine is the best way to safeguard your smile against emergencies. Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and replace your toothbrush every three months or anytime you get sick. In addition, floss at least once before bed to remove plaque and debris from between your teeth. If you want to go the extra mile, you can also rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash.

Be Careful with Your Diet

You are what you eat, and that’s especially true for your oral health. Sugary foods, sticky candies, and acidic drinks can wear down your enamel and increase your risk of cavities or tooth sensitivity. Try to moderate snacking between meals, and when you do, reach for tooth-friendly choices like crunchy fruits, vegetables, cheese, and nuts. Drinking plenty of water also helps rinse away acids, food particles, and bacteria that get left behind.

Invest In Protection for Your Smile

If you live an active lifestyle—playing sports, biking, or skateboarding—a mouthguard should be part of your standard gear. Even a basic boil-and-bite guard from a sporting goods store is better than no protection at all. This appliance can help cushion your teeth from impacts that could lead to chips, cracks, or knocked-out teeth. Taking precautions now helps you avoid dental injuries that could take months to fully repair.

Use Tools, Not Teeth, to Open Packaging

It’s easy to bite down on a package or bottle with your teeth to try and open it, but this habit can quickly lead to chips, cracks, or broken restorations. Your teeth are designed for chewing food—not acting as impromptu pliers. Always keep small tools, like scissors or a bottle opener, nearby to make these small jobs easier and safer for your smile.

Ensuring Your Comfort and Care

Our team at Dizon Dental Aesthetics is committed to providing a comfortable and caring environment, even in emergency situations. We offer rapid, gentle, and thorough treatment to reduce your pain and address the underlying issues causing it.

Please note: the at-home remedies provided are temporary measures designed to alleviate pain and prevent further damage until you can see us. They are not alternatives to professional dental care. If not promptly treated, dental emergencies can escalate, leading to more complicated, and often more expensive, treatment requirements.

Dental Emergency FAQs

Are Swollen Gums an Emergency?

Initially, swollen or tender gums might not seem like much of an issue. The reason that’s not the case is because abnormal symptoms like these are often due to gum disease. So, don’t take the “wait and see” approach. Instead, contact our Dallas emergency dentist when you first notice that something is wrong.

What Does Throbbing Tooth Pain Mean?

Throbbing tooth pain is often the result of a serious infection, which is why we recommend scheduling an emergency exam ASAP. The sooner you come in for an appointment, the sooner we can determine what’s causing your discomfort. From there, we can review your treatment options and decide together the best way to restore your healthy, pain-free smile.

What if My Toothache Suddenly Disappears?

Oftentimes, patients assume that their symptoms have subsided because the cavity or infection has gone away. Usually, it’s the opposite: it has progressed to the point where the nerve of your tooth is now dead. For this reason, we strongly recommend scheduling an emergency exam with us, even if the situation doesn’t seem urgent. Our goal is to assess the state of your oral health, determine if restorative care is needed, and, if it is, intervene before the surrounding teeth and gums are negatively impacted too.

Should I Visit the Emergency Room First for Dental Emergencies?

We do recommend visiting the ER first if you are experiencing any potentially life-threatening symptoms, like trouble breathing or uncontrollable bleeding. For toothaches, tender gums, damaged restorations, and other “straightforward” dental injuries, you should call us instead. In addition to alleviating any pain you’re experiencing, we’ll assess the severity of the damage, review your treatment options, and get to work on restoring your healthy smile.

Can I Pop a Dental Abscess on My Own?

No, you should never pop a dental abscess on your own. Not only will this not address the root of the problem, but it can expose your mouth to more bacteria and result in the infection spreading throughout your throat and neck. For all of these reasons, we recommend scheduling an emergency exam with us if you notice a pimple-like bump on your gums. In addition to carefully opening and draining the abscess, we can provide any further restorative care that’s needed, like root canal therapy.

I Struggle with Dental-Related Anxiety. What Should I Do?

Like many other patients, the anxiety you experience surrounding the dental office may have resulted in you avoiding it altogether. Don’t worry – we aren’t here to judge you on the past; we’re here to help you have a healthy smile again. Plus, sedation dentistry is available for patients who struggle with nerves, stress, and anxiety. In other words, if you need a little extra help staying calm and comfortable in the treatment chair, don’t hesitate to let us know.

Should I Worry About a Chipped Tooth If It Doesn’t Hurt?

If you aren’t experiencing anything unusual, like persistent sensitivity, you might assume that calling us isn’t necessary. The truth is that even relatively small chips can lead to further damage and infection. So, we do recommend scheduling an appointment with us, even if it’s a day or two from now.

Should You Put a Knocked-Out Tooth in Water?

Although water can be used to gently remove dirt from the surface, it cannot preserve the root surface cells of your tooth. That’s why we recommend placing it back in its socket. If it doesn’t slide back into place easily or attempting this makes you nervous, that’s okay – you can put your tooth in a clean container filled with milk or saline solution instead.

Is It Safe to Repair Dentures with Superglue?

Since superglue contains toxins that are not safe to ingest, it is not safe to use it. Not only that, but this adhesive doesn’t work well in damp environments, it can cause an allergic reaction, and it can negatively affect the way food tastes. So, whether there is a small crack in the surface or your denture has broken into several pieces, the best thing to do is schedule an appointment with our emergency dentist in Dallas.

Is It Safe to Use A Toothpick?

Toothpicks, particularly wooden ones, are not recommended. There are a few reasons for this, including that they can damage your enamel, irritate your gums, and splinter off in your mouth. The best thing to do if you have something stuck between your teeth is to use a clean strand of floss. If the debris remains firmly in place, try rinsing with warm saltwater a few times (this should help loosen it).

What Does Chronic Bad Breath Mean?

Oftentimes, patients who are struggling with chronic bad breath assume that the root of the problem is a cavity or gum disease. While that’s certainly possible, there’s also a chance that the unpleasant odor is stemming from an inconsistent oral hygiene regimen or a diet filled with pungent foods, like red onions, garlic, and fish. If you eliminate foods like these from your meals and commit to a solid oral hygiene regimen, but the odor continues to persist, then schedule an appointment with us ASAP.

How Should I Sleep with Tooth Pain?

In an effort to help our patients who are in pain, we offer same-day emergency appointments. That said, some patients can’t get to our office right away because they are stuck at work or are out of town. If that’s the case for you, it’s helpful to know what you can do to alleviate your discomfort long enough to get a good night’s sleep.

The first step we recommend taking is eating soft, bland foods at dinner, like oatmeal. Then, after brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash, use a cold compress for 10 minutes at a time. About 30 minutes before bed, take OTC pain medication as directed and prop yourself up on a few pillows so your head stays elevated throughout the night.
